"Introduction to Zen Meditation"

Beginners' Course running in June - details here

Zen is a form of Buddhism that gives central importance to meditation, to personal experience of its teachings and to the expression of the great matters of life and death – not in theological or metaphysical terms, but in practical everyday forms.

We are a Zen group in the lineage of Taizan Maezumi Roshi, a Japanese Zen Master recognised by both the Rinzai and Soto schools of Zen, who was one of the first wave of authentic teachers to bring Zen to the West from Japan. Maezumi Roshi's Western dharma successors, and their successors in turn, are the "White Plum Sangha". The Liverpool Zen Group is under the leadership of Dave Shoji Scott Hoshi, a student of Zen Master Genpo Merzel Roshi, dharma successor to Maezumi Roshi and leader of the White Plum Sangha.

Our Mission Statement

It is our wish to promote compassion and understanding for life as it is
May penetrating light dispel the darkness of ignorance
May we realise the Buddha Way together

The Liverpool group consists of lay practitioners from all around Merseyside, and we meet for meditation several times a week, primarily on Wednesday evenings at 7.00. Newcomers are always welcome to join us for meditation (see the weekly schedule for more information).

Please have a look around our website - if you have specific questions, please see the 'Contacts' section to get in touch. If you'd like to be added to our mailing list, please subscribe here (you can easily unsubscribe).

The Liverpool Zen Group is also part of MerseyBuddhists, an inter-Buddhist forum for a variety of Buddhist traditions in and around Liverpool which, among other functions, represents the interests of local Buddhists to the Merseyside Council of Faiths.

Note: there is another group sometimes known as the "Liverpool Zen Group", also known as the Serene Reflection Meditation Group or the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives, part of a specific Soto Zen lineage which is headquartered at the Throssel Hole Abbey. Please see their MerseyBuddhists page or the Abbey's page if you are looking for them, rather than our White Plum Sangha group.
