Dave Shoji Scott Hoshi

After gaining a doctorate at Manchester University, he left academic life to travel and write. He went to Okinawa in 1974 where he studied with Master Kanei Uechi at the dojo in Futenma. On his return to Liverpool, he started his own dojo, which still thrives today. He is a 6th dan, a founder of the Uechi-Ryu Karate Association (Great Britain) and is presently ranked Renshi.

Dave has been a Zen practitioner with the Kanzeon Zen Buddhist Sangha since 1982 under the guidance of Genpo Merzel Roshi. In 2002 he was given the rank of Hoshi ("dharma holder") by Genpo Roshi – this means that he is now a qualified Zen teacher in the White Plum Asangha. In 2006, Dave took his monk's ordination ("tokudo") with Genpo Roshi at the Kanzeon Zen Centre in Salt Lake City, Utah (photos of the ceremony can be found in our Galleries).
